09:30 - 12:30 Seminar Overview There is a barrage of economic data releases which impact financial markets on a daily basis. But often the fundamentals of these data releases are not well understood. The data come in a variety of forms – adjusted and unadjusted, with or without revisions, and with contrasting methodologies between different countries. Regularly it is the details and components of these releases that are just as significant as the headline figures. This course looks at the main economic data releases in depth and addresses the issue of what really matters to different financial markets. It will look at official economic statistics and a wide variety of surveys to explore the issues of relevance to markets and the international comparability of releases across the major economies. This three-hour workshop will cover the following: The statistical basics – what statisticians do and why Lagging and leading indicators The variety of guides to consumer spending The importance of surveys in gauging business spending The multitude of activity and price data for housing markets What measures of inflation (and inflation expectations) are most relevant What information is especially important for central banks What you will gain: A better upstanding of how economic statistics are compiled What data releases are especially significant for what markets How to get beyond the data headlines and assess the relevant details What surveys give the best early warning signals How ostensibly similar economic statistics differ across the major economies Who should attend? Those in financial institutions who are involved in sales, trading or fund management, who wish to have a better understanding of how economic data impact on markets. This would be especially valuable to new entrants and established practitioners whose background is not in economics, but who continually need to react to economic data and news flow as it happens.
